I'm thinking of buying a '99 or '00 X308 early next year but have been unable to find list of interior/exterior colour combinations, can any PH Jaguar experts help please?

2000 MY cars were:

XJ8 and Sovereign. Nimbus and Slate / Ivory and Sable / Oatmeal and Antelope / Cashmere and Sable/ Warm Charcoal / Catkin and Pine.

XJR and Sport Pack. Oatmeal and Warm Charcoal / Nimbus and Warm Charcoal
Ivory and Warm Charcoal / Warm Charcoal.

There were some options for piping on the seats too using combinations of the colours above.

Exterior colours were, as far as I can see, not tied to any combination of interior trim.

They were, Spindrift, Topaz, Emerald, Titanium, BRG, Seafrost, Mistral, Pacific, Alpine, Westminster, Carnival, Saphire, Anthracite.

Bit sad IMO having all that info to hand - but I've been really bored today

Thanks Steve, that helps.

Ideally I'm looking for dark blue or silver with a grey or black interior up to £4,000. Is there much chance of finding one - a good one that is?

TBH I'd not worry too much about the right colour combination - although finding one you really like would be nice - and suggest you spend a bit of time trawling through the old threads on here. Your budget will certainly get you a good X308, but it's essential to be aware of exactly what may or not be a good buy.

Broardbean747 posted an excellent and very detailed guide to the X308 and there's a lot of good information from other posts too.

Briefly you need to be aware that the secondary timing chain tensioners can fail and MUST be replaced with the revised metal bodied type, timing chains can wear, water pumps and thermostats can fail and the gearbox and 'diff although sealed for life should have regular oil changes if they are to last. There have also been some cases of severe corrosion behind the front shocks too. Jaguar's 10k service intervals are very marginal under some driving conditions too so a high mileage car should be viewed very carefully indeed.

Try to find a really well maintained car - one that shows evidence of real care, perhaps belonging to a Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club (jagads) member that has has had all the concerns fixed already. 308 XJ's can be cheap to buy but if you buy the wrong one it will be anything but cheap to run.

It's the OH who is a bit particular about the colour and as we're each buying half for Christmas I have to listen - sometimes....

I've done all the reading possible: BB's very informative post and every Jaguar forum I can find, I also have the Jaguar World guide to the X300/X308.

I've a couple of cars short listed (hopefully they won't sell over the Christmas/New Year period) and reckon I know what to check for; I'll report back on progress.

OH wants an XJ too?...lucky man.

Mrs JS flatly refuses to drive mine which means a half of lager shandy for me frown with my lunch whenever we go out for the day or have a weekend away.

OH is paying half the price and reckons we should increase our budget to £6K but I haven't yet explained about replacing tensioners, changing fluids etc.

I've spent much of the past week searching the internet for cars to view but many which are the right colour, low mileage are LWB which I (we) don't fancy.

We're not in a rush though, the right car is out there somewhere - I hope.

You're right not to rush IMHO - £6k should get you a good one and leave cash for tensioners and fluids
