working on a mates audi coupe which has had top mounts, front and rear wishbone bushes, new tie rod ends, new lower ball joints, (cambered and tracked recently as well)
I took it for a test drive and to my surprise i was able to turn the wheel from 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock without much affect on the direction of the car.
I'm thinking the steering racks had it (the dust covers are ripped and its losing fluid)...
any other ideas?

Should be easy enough to start the engine and with the car on a ramp or over a pit (and the weight of the car on the wheels) rock the stering slightly from side to side whilst someone underneath feels the rack joints for play. In any case, I think a torn rack gaiter is an MOT fail anyway.
