I have a quick question.

What would be the odds on rolling a double 1, then double 2 then double 3 with a pair of dice.

Just a little puzzling for my simple Gavin and Stacy watching brain.

(6 x 6)x (6 x 6) x (6 x 6)?

That was a guess by the way.

It should be 1/46656, I think. Or 1/(6^6). It would work for any 6 numbers that you want in a particular order, ie 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and then 6.

Surely (1/6 x 1/6) x (1/6 x 1/6) x (1/6 x 1/6)

0.166666 x 0.166666 x 0.166666

= 0.00077

Or am I missing something?

Yup, you've only calculated 1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6. Which is half way there. wink

Yes. The odds of getting a double are 1/6 times 1/6 which equals 1/36. The odds of getting 3 doubles in a row are 1/36 times 1/36 times 1/36 which equals 1/46656.

It isnt a trick question, just a a maths question that my feeble brain is struggling with.

I was hoping for a something-1 answer. Like 12-1

Ps, I dont think it will be as low as 12-1

Makes no difference with things like dice, where each outcome is unaffected by the others and is a fixed chance. IE, the chance of 6 1's is 1/46656. The chance of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and then 6 is the same. Works for any six numbers in any chosen order.

A bookmaker would have a field day with you lot! The odds of throwing a single 1 are 5/1.
