Someone's lying to me... possibly.

Right, background: my brother is away for the first time at Christmas so I decided to host xmas (change of surrounding for the folks etc).

Now my sister was meant to be coming. She now tells me that she is working xmas eve 'until 11pm' and won't be able to make it down. I think it's an excuse.

How plausible is it that a company will have all of it's heads of department in on xmas evening working out budgets/bonuses?

As far as I’m aware Q1 budgets are pretty much wrapped up now at most places.

Am I wrong or is she lying?

It depends;

Does she work in a petrol station (possibly yes) or for a construction company (definitely no)?

I would think that the industry would be a good indication...

I'll get over it, I'm sure it'll affect my parents more than anything. Plus I hate being lied to. Luckily i'm quite good at this and will actually prove she's lying.

I make a rule of not missing people who don't want to be there. If she doesn't want to be there, she wouldn't have been on top form anyways.

One of my first jobs while still at school (this was back in the early 90's) was a Christmas job at Woolworths (RIP). I worked 'til 11:30pm on Christmas Eve pulling the decorations down in preparation for the New Year/January sales.

As others have said, it depends on the industry.

Markets shut early on Christmas eve. If she's working out bonuses I don't think it will take till 11pm... it doesn't take that long to write a big fat zero.
