How much to post an Xmas card to Europe

Sorry about this but I can't find it on the Royal Mail site...

I've just had a Christmas card I sent to Holland returned with a big sticker on it saying that 'not enough postage for airmail'. (The card has in no way been marked as "airmail" I might add)

It has a first class stamp on it and is a normal size/weight card. I have always sent my cards and letters to France and Holland using first class stamps, which is, as far as I'm aware, normal for surface mail.

Does anyone know if this is still the case? This card is the only one that had my address on the back and I'm going to be pretty fked off if not one of the 20-odd cards I've sent to France and Holland have been delivered

Did you not find the pricefinder on the Royal Mail site, it's pretty idiot proof although you do have to know the weight of the item you are sending.

I've tried that but it makes no sense - I've never had to weigh each and every letter before - it seems to me that things have taken a backward step (but hey, this is the post office, why should I be surprised!)

I thought that within the EU there was a reciprocal arrangement type of thing whereby normal letters sent first class could go to any other country?

As I said - I've done this every year up until now and a FC stamp has been fine.
