Planning a trip next May 09 to see the 24 hour race at Spa (Belgium) for a change to Le Mans & CLM.

We have never visited this circuit previously and would welcome any recommendations for accomodation, viewing points, local drives, crossings & places of interest etc from fellow PH'ers who have attended this race or circuit previously?

Went to the Spa Six Hours Sports car race in September this year. First time I had been to Spa...its a fantastic circuit for spectating ..and driving I guess! Must do Track Day there in 2009.

Access to the whole track is possible and some excellent viewing areas..we found it best to walk the whole thing..about 4.5 miles..well worth it.Stayed in a town called Vielsalm about 30/40 mins drive away..nice roads around so not a hardship.
Hotel we used was Hotel Myrtilles..comfortable, good food and well priced. We did a package thing with Travel Destinations...would definately use them again.

It will not be a problem finding good restaurants.

Hope that helps..enjoy!

went to it for the first time last year and camped within 5 mins walk into the circuit - opposite the hotel on the corner. If you can cope with 'camping', the closest 'commercial site' was spot on with very good toilet and shower facilities - both always managed and spotless.
As for the circuit? Awesome viewing from almost anywhere.
We did a quick run over from Spa to the Ring in the early hours of the Sunday morning Spa race (less than an nour drive via some superb roads) so we got two quick laps in on the NS!! That is what you call a weekend!! By the way, the Ring 24 hour is two weeks later and is by far the most impressive 24hr race of the season IMHO.

have been to the Spa 24hr now three years on the trot, was getting fed up of Le mans. Spa is great as a spectator, good atmosphere and better racing.

We also have camped at the camp ground in Francorchamps opposite the hotel. Friday night is very good at the hotel bar, watch out for the Vitaphone Maserati team!

The year before last we did the Nurburgring trip on the Friday afternoon, then Spa Saturday/Sunday. Great weekend.

No need to book at the campsite, arrival by Friday lunchtime is recommended though.

Anyone got any more suggestions on specific websites to look at, restaurants/pubs etc. in the area? Information seems a lot more thin on the ground for this than Le Mans, cheers.

The race in May (9/10th)is known as 1000KM of Spa, dont think its 24hr, I could be wrong, it is deffo the Le Mans Series though

Take a look on Spa's offical website or www.race-rally.be
There is a list of hotels & resturants in the surounding area, hotel accomodation maybe limited as its only a few weeks away.
Spa has plenty of places to eat & drink but its low key, same for the surround villages. If you want nightlife try Aachen in Germany which is 50 mins away

You can buy tickets in advance via a form on the offical site or at the circuit on the weekend.

Hope that helps

This years Spa 24 is on the 25th and 26th of July. The race in May is part of the Le Mans series and not a 24. 1000kms = approx 6 hours. The Spa 24 is for GT1 GT2 and other invited cars to make up the 50+ grid. Sadly no prototypes.
I have been going to the 24 since 2002 and for me it is better than Le Mans for spectating. You can walk all round, and the track is set in the forest. Paddock access is only a few Euro on top of general admission. We usually get covered grandstand tickets in case of rain or fatigue.
We camp just outside the track at Le Coombe. Its a bit crude as its just a field and the shower block is a couple of minutes walk away toward Rivage (nothing special but it keeps you clean)
There are a few hotels in Francorchamps (which is a tiny hamlet) - Racing Hotel and Formel 1 spring to mind. If you go on the Belgian Tourist Board website there is plenty of info. Take a look at Stavelot and Malmedy 2 nice little towns which were part of the original 14kms track.
Take a look at Norfolkline for cheap crossings.
Whichever race you attend I'me sure you will have a great time.

Nurburg...
Straight down to Malmedy then Waimes, Butgenbach, Stadkyl, Oberehe, Kelberg is a absolutely stonking drive, watch the hairpin about 2 miles east of Birgel, particularly on the way back!

I was thinking about trying out the Nurburgring 24 hours this year, as an alternative to Le Mans, but I'm starting to think that Spa would be better. I've visited both circuits before (though not when there's been a race on) and I'm guessing that it's much easier to get around Spa to see the action? Also, does anybody know how much race tickets and camping are at Spa as the site is still set up for 2009?!

Thanks a lot

I've been to the 24hrs at Spa and the 'ring, the racing was better to watch at Spa, but it was a much better weekend at the ring. Getting around the 'ring isnt really a problem, we stay at Mullenbach and from there you can walk to the GP circuit and around to Aremburg no problem at all. Driving to Adenau lets you watch the come down the hill to ex-Muhle and you can walk (albeit uphill!) back to Aremberg; from Brunnchen you can get back to the Karusseland around there's plenty to see the other way. Unfortunately that does mean limitting the drinking to the extent that someone is good to drive the following day. There's more to see off the track at the 'ring as well, especially as the new museum and complex will be finished come May.
