Noisy aux belt

In the cold weather, my aux has started making a whining noise. Took it to a local garage, they advised spraying some wd40 over the belts/tensioners. Doesn't seem like a good idea to me, I would of thought that could cause the belt to slip (as it;s a lubricant) or am I wrong?

WD40 solves it for about 5 minutes.

I used a piece of candle wax, held against the belt as the engine was running for 5-10 seconds. Solved it completly.

Why not just replace the belt ?

As stated, WD40 will quieten it for 5 mins.....at best.


Although unless the noise is bad...its probably nothing to worry about

It does work and for longer than 5 mins.
IIRC WD40 contains lanolin which will serve to soften the age hardened rubber belt as will the candle wax. The softer rubber will then have increased grip.

Yep - used Wd40 loads of times and it's a good idea.. but the main benefit is that you know the belt is the problem.. so you should look at replacing it fairly soon.

just change it,WD40 or any other similar product is only temporary.
