4.2 Dip & Beam problem
Discussion
I can't seem to get my Dip beam to come on. They were fine, then when I went out about an hour later no joy!
Side lights fine, turn the switch and nothing, no dipped headlights. I can get main beam in the normal way but the lights just return to side lights.
I removed the Dip Beam unit from the boot and then re-connected but no joy. Oddly if I remove the Dip beam unit from the boot completely the lights perform in the same manner. ie I can turn the lights on from the switch and switch between dip and beam just the same as if the unit were connected? Obviously no dip beam still.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Does anyone think it's likely to be the infamous ribbon connection?

Have you checked both lighting control boxes in the boot? This happened to me a few weeks ago and I could see the two burnt connectors going in to the control box situated to the left in the boot. Managed to pull the connector out and scrape off the melted plastic, should disconnect the battery as I got some sparks when I was doing it!
Hmmm, thanks guys I'll have another look. My Dim Dip box is on the right (standing behind the car) and I don't have another which indicates it's a lighting control box. Nonetheless I'll have a look again. The Dim Dip box is in my kitchen. If I open it up is it likely I'll see anything obvious?
Thanks again
Mike
Thanks again

I HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM BUT HIGH BEAM DECIDED NOT TO WORK, WAS OK BUT NOW NOT, I HAVE CHECKED MY FUSE BUT OK SO I WILL CHECK THE DIP DIM BOX. ALSO REAR FOG DECIDED NOT TO WORK BUT I SUSPECT BOTH HIGH BEAM LIVE FEEDS AND REAR FOG LIVE COMES FROM LIGHT SWITCH, I SHALL HAVE TO CHECK WIRING DIAGRAM

Dim/dip is o/side on mine, red/blue terminal melted. Lights switch box is n/s red terminal melted. I had exactly the same symptoms I cut out the melted plastic from the multi block and crimped on individual small spades. All good now.
just gave mine a wiggle as my dipped beam was not working, not realising i had two control boxes (one has already been bypassed (loop for HID)). looks as if my guys at TopCats have repaired this for me before. it seems as if a small war has gone on around the box - seriously melted, and previous burning. anyone on here running HID's and able to bypass this box...?
Thanks everyone once I located the N/S Lighting Control Box my wiring had melted as stated by others. I've let a bit of wire in for now and I'll do a better job when time permits.
I guess for me the real question is how do I stop it doing the same thing again. Worrying enough that this is mounted on to of the petrol tank. Does any know why this circuit over heats when others are fine? It's clearly the connection as the internals don't seem to have suffered from over heating.

The best fix is to mount 4 relays in the wings 2 each side above the inspection cover and drive them from the existing wiring.
You need a fused feed from the battery which I ran in convoluted tube alongside the oil pipes and into the N/S wing.
I ran the earths to the earth point on the O/S front chassis rail near the rad fan.
Those plus new reflectors and decent bulbs made a significant difference.
And you do need to disconnect one of the wires on the dim/dip box so the relays don't chatter when the side lights are on.

Mike, do you know what wire you need to disconnect? You need a fused feed from the battery which I ran in convoluted tube alongside the oil pipes and into the N/S wing.
