Hi all I'm thinking of selling up in favour of the new ford focus RS. Reasons for and against please and feel free to voice your personal opinions on the RS. Current car is a 5.7 VXR, cheers Al.

FWD. nuff said.

After driving the old RS it was awful in anything other than a very careful straight line. even then it wanted to torque steer all over the place.

That was my experience of the mk1 focus as well, but I recently drove a renaultsport megane r26 which was mindblowing through the bends with hardly any torque steer, only problem was when you had to look at it. The focus rs mk2 is said to have ironed out all the mk1 steering problems.

Why ?

One is a fwd piece of modern junk with no character, with the potential for no end of trouble.

The other is a cool car.

The RS sounds like it will be awesome but I doubt it will hold the same appeal as your V8. Instead, why not modify your Ro and enjoy it? If you do like I have it will be much faster than the RS too.

I think the road response pack will be my next purchase, already got the quick rack steering. I really would like it to handle a bit better. Have you had it fitted to yours.

when you see the new rs in the flesh you will want one. anyone who went to the motorshow will tell you this.

pros: more economical, new with warranty, cheap to fix if ever required when out of warranty, lovely interior with recaro seats, looks awesome, very tuneable, unfortunately you wont know how it drives till it comes out but i imagine it will be excellent handling and very quick, thats about it until some are road tested.

cons: will attract A LOT of attention, pretty juicy (but frugal compared to the v8), new car depreciation (although i doubt as bad as most new cars),thats about it until some are road tested.

if you post this question in a section that is not devoted to monaro`s you might get a less biassed load of opinions.

although i do also love a really nice monaro as they have lots of character and are real brutes (unfortunately these attributes are a bit of a double edged sword and make for a very american style muscle car with all the pros and woes that go with them), i am thinking the rs will be a much cheaper car to run and a much better handling car and just as quick and better sit in and to look at (looks are always subjective to personal preference), and tuneable if you ever fancy it (there is a focus st with 450bhp and 280bhp-330bhp conversions are commonplace so i imagine the rs will be even more tuneable).

all of this is IMO

bet the focus would cost more to run.

servicing on the Ro starts £130!!!!! tyres not mega expensive decent ones from £130 each, massively tunable and i bet the RS wont be much better fuel wise and i bet it will cost more to insure.

the biggest thing in all this is that its FWD!!!!!! FWD IS SHIT!!!!! driven plenty powerful FWD cars and they were pants compared to the Monaro and other Powerful RWD cars i have had, leave the front wheels to do the steering!

Thanks for you unbiased view. Dont think it could get more attention than a monaro though, We've got clarkson to thank for that.

This is the way i see it.

1.If you want to be one of a priviledged few(which you are) keep the 5.7 and maybe upgrade it or buy a 6.0 VXR with a S/C if you want to look even better and go really fast in straight lines and wonder if your car is out to kill you when the corners come up, but it will put a massive grim on your face all the time and everyone will hear you from miles off.

2. If you want to go really fast and go around bends at brake neck speeds and still feel like to cars going to kill you get an Mitsu Evo 8 FQ400. There's no replacment for a light weight chassis and 4 wheel drive and 400BHP upwards. Its got a better power to weight rario than any standard VXR 500

3. And if you want to look like that old over weight woman around the corner from me who drives to and from tesco's and the school each day.But nobody notices her driving down the road. Get a Focus if you want to blend in with the norm get yourself a Focus RS or ST.....

Even though i loved my Evo i do miss it when i come across some empy country lanes. But the Ro looks, sounds the B******s.

Take a Evo for drive if you really want to sell the Ro, After the test drive you want buy a Focus.

If you can afford to buy a new RS then the way I see it is you have an even bigger headache. Apart from mods for the Ro, what other car could you buy for the money? New or second hand? Sorry to answer a question with another, but that's what I'd be thinking.

I found the evo to be... well.. dull. Sure it's quick (actually damn quick) but I just didn't enjoy it. Took a Evo 6 RS Extreme on track with slicks and was happily passing everything other than radicals but again... got bored very quickly. The service intervals were the final thing to put me off.

Similar reasons I didn't get an M5 - the M5 is a much better handling car than the vxr8 but it doesn't make it fun. I prefer things to be a little rough round the edges and reward driver involvement than santitise the whole experience with electronics and 4wd. The vxr8 is great because it isn't perfect.

I'm not bashing the evo - it's a great car but just not for me.

FWD is good for a day to day car - at the end of the day it's safer for heavy footed/handed drivers. I use a mini JCW cooper s for town driving and it's fun in a different way to the vxr8. Also a bit nippier in traffic.
But my proper fun car is RWD (with no doors, windscreen or roof) and thats the way I like it.

The focus should be a very good car to drive and if they do the exhaust right will sound excellent to boot. However we wont know until it arrives.

The comparison is one that will probably never be made in the motoring press so is difficult to sway either way. FWD is the major thing, personally I still dont have that much experience in RWD so always find FWD where im most comfortable especially when pushing on a bit. If the diffs done right which hopefully it will then the handling will be excellent. The focus will probably get too much of the wrong kind of attention though.

If it was me and you have £25k personally would wait another few months and pick up an M6 if you could live with the auto. If not mod the monaro and have some real fun!
