S-Type Auto "Gearbox Fault" warning message
Discussion
Hi guys,
Bit worried! Took my car out tonight to go for a meal. Had trouble parking due to the restaurant being on a busy road. Saw a parking space so did a pretty quick and slightly jerky 3 point turn, basically went from drive to reverse and back to drive fairly quickly.
Parked up and went for the meal. Got in the car about 3 hours later to find an amber light and "gearbox fault" message displayed on the dashboard. I pulled away before I noticed it and then stopped immediately. Turned the engine off and back on again and it had gone. I drove about 10/15 miles home and no problems.
Could this be down to me "mistreating" the box earlier on in the evening. I've never had the warning before, but i usually drive it very gingerly.
FYI its a 2004 S-Type 2.5 V6 Auto with 53k on the clock.
Thanks
Si

It could be.
If you normally drive gently a bit of general wear or oil degredation in the gearbox will go unnoticed. If you've really smacked it about the box may have picked up on an out of range pressure or component movement that has not occured before - hence the fault message.
As the warning has gone after a re start I'd guess this is what has happened.
If you've not read any of the other threads on here you may not be aware of the need for regular gearbox oil changes - even though the ZF 'box is "sealed for life" they can and do fail due to breakdown of the gearbox oil. Rough gearchanges and error messages are symptoms of oil failure amongst other faults so even though it's not a routine service item I'd suggest at your cars age and mileage it's well worth having the oil and filter changed to preserve the gearbox.
It's important to use the correct Esso oil and not the usual Dexron III.
Any main stealer or Jaguar independent will do the job for you for perhaps a couple of hours labour.
