Camping in Wales

I need to be in a tent in the middle of Feb for one night near the Elan Valley.

So, any suggestions on good places as they all look a much of a muchness.

They must let me start a fire.

I like cooking food outside.

I like Wales.

The last time I went camping was under a Basha, I want to break Missus Howitzer in gently so a camp site with a fence round it and the possibility of a working toilet will be an advantage.

If it's cold, i'll wear a wooly hat.

Google 'wild camping wales' and you'll find lots of threads that will help, but bear in mind camping anywhere in England and Wales without the landowners permission is technically illegal.

If you really want to get away from it all, may I suggest the little mountain road that goes from Beulah on the A483 through Abergwesyn to Tregaron. There are lots of excellent and isolated wild camping spots along there with fabulous scenery and it's off the normal Welsh tourist circuit. About a third of the way along there are two water splashes across the road and a little farmhouse which owns the fields along the river and used to let people camp in them if they asked nicely. . . . .

If you really are going to do this the most important thing will be to keep warm at night so

a) Get a decent proper sleeping mat/self inflating mattress & put insulation (old sleeping bag/blankets etc etc) underneath it. Air mattresses make you cold - avoid.
b) 3 season sleeping bag minimum (if not 4)
c) Layers of thermal clothing and a hat to wear at night
d) Hot water bottle(s) (or just use a metal water flask & fill it with hot water)

If you work on the basis that you can't "make heat" in bed (unless you get "jiggy" with your better half of course )you will be on the right track. So you need to insulate yourself from underneath as well as on top & to keep what heat you have & then add more via the hot water bottle if you can.

A tent with an outer and an inner will be warmer & make sure it has a sewn in growndsheet. Pitch your tent with its back to the wind and in as much shelter as you can find. Use every guy rope and tent peg there is (and have some spares and a roll of duck tape handy)

Be very careful if you have a fire, it only takes one flying ember to melt a big hole in yr tent! Campsiite with electric hookup and small 1-2Kw fan heater might be your best friend as well! Don't cook in the tent whatever the weather.

I've done a fair bit of camping and used to teach campcraft so I should be ok.

I've just never done it with Pitches, a proper tent, that kind of wishy washy stuff

The fact I have an air filled roll up mattress makes me feel like i'm leaking testosterone as it is

I surpose breaking her in to camping gently in wales is better than Scotland in feb!! Less cold I expect! But I wouldn't do it!
