Whilst cleaning the engine bay on my 2000 xkr, I opened the air box and found the air filter & housing partly soaked of fresh oil. I had a recent blow by a few months ago which was ok when I bought it. Does this potentially mean new engine time!!!vomit

Oil where it shouldn't be is usually a sign of either excess crankcase pressure, too much oil in the sump or a collapsed or blocked breather pipe somewhere.

Jaguar issued A TSB about blocked part load breather orifice. That's inside the connector stub for the breather pipe on the left hand bank of the engine. Take the pipe off and gently twist a 2.5mm drill bit down the breather stub on the cam cover to clean it. You'll need to go down about 40mm. Check none of the breather hoses are collapsed or blocked

Check the oil level. Too much is bad news and has to be drained off asap otherwise you risk serious engine damage.

Start the engine and loosen the oil filler cap, keeping it over the filler hole. There should be little or no pressurised air escaping - a good engine should pull a slight vacuum - if there is a great deal of pressure or lots of oil mist then it might be worth cleaning the throttle butterfly and body with carb cleaner. If the butterfly is not seating correctly due to a build up of gum and oil reside then this can affect the flow of air through the breather system - but you usually get low speed drivability and stalling problems if this is the cause.

If none of this works then a blowby test is needed. Ideally you want to see less then 25l/m although a fail is 40l/m.

Might not be as serious as you think then - don't let it spoil your christmas - but you can use always these checks an excuse to get out of the washing up wink.

Thanks Steve not yet managed to get out to check what you said although I have noticed:

1. It low on oil but I have also noticed quite a big leak on the drive.
2. surge on/off 30mph @ 1500 rpm (not misfire)
3. Stalling if revved when cold only stationary.
4. Blowby a few weeks ago was low & fine
5. Pulls hard/agresve throught the rev range.
6. Puffs out excess smoke upon start up and only after the filter was openned.

Cheers

OK
Top up the oil and find the leak. Check for excess crankcase pressure/blocked breather.
Surge and stalling could be dirty throttle body and butterfly. Carb cleaner and a wipe round with a clean rag.
Blue smoke on start up is usually worn valve stem seals, but if there's lots of oil in the throttle body and manifolds this won't help.
See anothr post here about start up smoke.
Blow by OK and good performance usually says the problem is not serious.

Not worth an hour's labour at an indy or an AA or RAC check? Shame to write it off without getting to the bottom of the problem - especially as it's passed a blow by recently and still performing well.
