A little bit of pain for a lot of gain.
Discussion
What is the most (metaphorical) pain that you have endured for a whole lot of gain?
Currently my GF and I are going through the pain part as this year we have bought out first house and she has also invested heavily in opening up her own vet practice. At the moment although our wages are perfectly acceptable there is very little breathing space and I can see this continuing for a good few years when hopefully the sacrafice will be worth it.

When I was 25 I got myself into a massive amount of debt...overspending on credit cards to the point of owing about 9 months salary. The next two years consisted of weekly budget sit downs and living at a very modest level to dig out. I never did it again, but those two years (caused completely by myself),were not pleasant.
Then,15 years ago, I got divorced.Because I had a ten year old son, I gave 100% of the assets to my wife, and a big maintenance payment for years. I moved to a very small, cheap apartment until I got a better job and got everything back to normal .
The big gain there was that I have a great relationship with my son.... he never had to move from the family home, or have any cut in standard of living. Not fighting over the money was one of the best decisions of my life.

The Pain: Having to continually leave home, the missus, cars, bikes, decent pubs for many months at a time and probably having to keep doing so for the forseeable future
The Gain: The salary that makes it almost worth it
Not having to pay the governemnt a penny of it
You work offshore too huh?

I shall be home again in January, Xmas eve today, I'll call home sometime today, see how things are, see if they miss me......

Sat in a dry dock in Genova at the moment, but at least I get to go home for a couple of days for new year!after a divorce in 1996, I left family and two small boys behind to start living in the UK, this enabled me to support the boys financially and give them oppurtunities that their peers did not have, Euro travel etc. However it meant that I missed a lot of time with my kids, however now after 12 odd years the boys are coming to join me, in a far better environment than they live in now. SA vs North America, NA wins
