Any IPOD whizzes out there?

OK here's the problem (I'm a CD man myself).

A recent computer upgrade has left no. 1 son without a record of his IPOD purchases (a library on computer?). All he has is a load of songs on his (old) IPOD.

New IPOD arrives for Christmas, and Apple appear to give no guidance whatsoever on how to transfer music from one IPOD to another. I believe they reguard this as piracy. Having said that I can't believe they expect him to repurchase all his music just because we have been suckered into buying their latest gadget.

So anybody know how to get music off one IPOD onto another?

I had a similar problem mate, iirc i had to make a folder, copy off my old ipod into it, then into my new i tunes and then finally update my new ipod. If you google it you will get lots of advice through ipod forums etc, thats what i did, hth.

Hi, the only way i can think of is to plug said ipod ( older one ) into pc, go to my computer, click on the ipod logo, then show all files. There should be a translucent folder called 'ipod control', go into this and there is another folder called 'music' with a lot of other folders which contain songs in a random order.

Could try the old copy and paste?.

Not sure 100% but worth a try I guess.

There are a plethora of programs on the net to enable transferring the contents of an ipod to a new pc. On the mac the program is called senuti, on PC, I can't remember off the top of my head, but google search it, and there are loads. Most of them, unfortunately you have to buy, but some are free.

When using these programs that get your music off your ipod do they also copy over your playlist folders?

i.e. When all the music if copied over onto the hard drive, will all my playlists appear when I open itunes?

I don't think they do.... the only slightly irritating thing about them.

I've seen in the last week somewhere, a gizmo where you plug the donor Ipod into one side and the receiving Ipod in the other and it transfers all the files without any PC involved. I think it was about £15/20.... will Google....

EDITED! This is the type of thing, but I saw it advertised in the UK considerably cheaper.

to get music off an ipod - depends on you computer OS
Windows : sharepod
Mac : senuti

I'm not sure if i've misinterpreted the O/P but if all he wants to copy are the purchased tracks you can connect the old iPod to iTunes, click "transfer purchases from iPod" near the bottom of the "file" tab on the top left. This will copy all the purchased tracks into iTunes, then when he connects the new iPod and syncs with the library the purchased tracks will be there.

This is assuming that he has all the other music he wants already in an iTunes library.
