The engine is on its stand without the MSD 6AL connected.
I want to set the static timing and assumed I would get some sort of reading off the dizzy magnetic pickup using a digital multimeter.
I can't get any sensible reading so do I need to put a voltage across it?
Anyone know?

What type of dizzy do you have? I run an MSD 8660 which is a hall effect device and needs 12V. A std GM HEI is the same. You also get variable reluctance sensors (magnet+coil) which will need 12V to function....though I'm not sure how you sensibly set static timing with a VR sensor... About the only thing that doesn't need juice directly applied is a contact breaker.

The dizzy is an MSD Pro-Billet Street #8361.
I didn't want to put 12V across it until I could be sure I was not going to blow it.
