Parking ticket without a ticket
Discussion
Wandered out of work this afternoon to find a gaggle of warden writing down numbers in their little black books.
The place where I (and many others park) is not entirely legal but hurting no-one, I work on an industrial estate and the only people who go down the dead end are the people who park their cars on the wide pavement, not causing any obstruction an with plenty of space to walk past. First time I've seen the hat wearing harpies in the year i've worked there.
I'm not debating that parking there is illegal, despite the fact there aren't enough parking spaces to go round, but the wardens were just writing down numbers without issuing any tickets.
Can I expect a ticket in the post? Is it valid considering there wasn't a ticket on the car, had I got there 5 minutes later I wouldn't have even know to expect something.
Assuming I do get something in the post, be it a letter or ticket, we're all going to have to keep parking there as there is nowhere else.
The way I see it, if the council want to get arsey, then it wouldn't be fair not to get arsey back
So what are my options for parking there?
1) Don't park there. Obvious but difficult to implement.
2) Place a car cover on the car when I park it. Are wardens allowed to remove the cover to see the plates?
3) Place covers only over the plates themselves. See point 2.
4) Remove plates when parked and take them into the offce with me for the day. Can I park up without having plates on display? They will be on the car when it is being driven.
Or do I just pay the ensuing fine and hope they don't come back for another year.

Pay the fine – it's a cheap year's parking if you ask me.
Unless they suddenly decide going down your road is a very nice little earner – in which case they'll be back time and time again.
If you do remove the plates, don't forget to remove your tax disc. In which case, they'll see an un-taxed, un-registered car on the pavement. In anyone's eyes, this spells abandoned and probably nicked.
Paying a release fee from having your car towed is much more expensive than the odd ticket.
Having said all that, I've been let off a few parking tickets in the past after writing letters. Have a look for any details (missing signs, worn out lines etc, though it'll be difficult if you were on the pavement) and see what you come up with.
You never know, nothing might come of it.
