Bringing a pet to a new country.......

Happy crimbo all!

Just a quick one as I know a lot of you have pets and so forth. My in-laws have offered to give me their cat as they are travelling a lot and cannot take care of it as much as they'd like to.

The only thing is the cat is in Bulgaria and would be brought over to live with us in Vienna.

Apart from chipping the cat, what else would need to be done. It's been an indoor cat all it's life and I've no plans of changing that and it's already been spaded (is that the correct term), and of course it's fully vaccinated with a vet record.

Are there any extra costs that need to be looked at and is it complicated or quite easy? I presume since Bulgaria is now part of the EU, it should be quite easy but there is no specific information available in English. Stacks of stuff in Bulgarian and German though!!!!

Sorry for the bad news but, if it's been buried, it is an ex cat...

The rules vary from country to country so you will be best to ask a vet (Ask one in Bulgaria) Also try looking on internet. In GB you'd look on the DEFRA website, I don't know what the equivalent would be for you guys.

Coming onto the more serious advice....The vet in my missus's town seems a bit clueless as to taking a pet out of the country. He told us to contact the passport office in Sofia which I thought was a bit odd and didn't offer any further advice. (I think he misunderstood it when I mentioned a "pet passport").

I think to be honest it needs to have an ID chip as well as be fully vaccinated with a clean bill of health from the vet.

I would also have to register the cat in Vienna with a local vet at the destination but the last thing I want is the poor thing stuck in quarantine because of something stupid I've missed out.

The only website I've found containing some info is asking me $7.50 for the correct documentation and I'm not forking out for free info!

Anybody on PH done this before?

Correct term spayed
In England if you are taking a pet abroad with the intention of bringing it back into England at a later date these are the general guidelines. (Only applicaple to countries part of the pet passport scheme) If pet is emmigrating they technically don't need passport etc, but it is generally advised better to do just in case.
1. Get identichipped (must be done first before anything else)
2. Get rabies vacc.
3. Get 2nd rabies vacc (about 3-4 weeks later) or take a chance and get blood tested. (Not all vacc take on one shot) At this point pet can travel abroad but can't come back into England for 6 months (and would have to have another shot whilst in new country if only had one shot and results came back too low)
4. Titre levels acceptable, start organising with vet suitable dates for getting passport done.
5. Helath ck 24-48hrs before travel and worm to protect against heartworm and any other possible parasites depending on area of travel.

In meantime sort out suitable travel arrangements for pet (i.e. type of travel, container to be used, has to be suitable size carrier etc)

As I said before not sure how it works between other countries but I hope this helps a bit. You really need to find a vet that is upto speed on it. (Over here they have to have LVI certification to be able to do export certificates)

Try the Austrian embassy in the UK, they should be able to help.

I should think as it is travelling from Europe to Europe there is no need to tell anyone. Simply pitch up in Austria and have it vaccinated/wormed etc as if you had adopted it in the UK from an unknown source.

sounds close to the truth for mainland europe!! prob what I would do

I am just in the process of bringing my dog from Russia into the UK. There are quite a few steps to go through to avoid quarantine.

Your situation should be easier as the cat is already in an EU country.

I really don't know. I only know that Britain is so paranoid about Rabies getting into the country they are strict about this protocol. Not sure if Europe will worry so much esp as many countries have it already.
