gear knob removal - help!

How do I take off the knob?

I've tried twisting the ?collar under the knob but only succeded in burring the metal. I've done a search and found that the collar screws downwards and the knob upwards. How do I turn the collar and which way? I assume I should try to twist it clockwise looking from the top.

Presumably a lot of force is needed.

Always thought I was too much of a wimp to drive a Cerb!

Any hints for the hard of thinking?

the bottom screws clockwise when looking from above, and the top one then un screws anti clockwise, but they can be very tight, I wrapped an old leather shamy around the top part them applied some mole grips, should be able to remove it like that without marking the knob.
