Learning to Dive...
Discussion
So...I've got a holiday booked for Hawaii in March. OH suggests learning to dive, but that it takes 4 days to get (some sort) of PADI certification. Typically this would be 2 days in the UK, and 2 days over there.
So, over to the PH experts...what is the best thing to do, and the best way to do it?

Do all of your training there in the UK.
Dont waste your holiday with exams or practical tests. The water will be hellish cold there in Blighty but suffer it and you'll hav a couple of extra daus in paradise.
While you're out there try a night dive. With the right conditions and the right location, it's a fabulous experience.
Good luck.

Hawaii is a great place just to swim and snorkel. Learning to scuba dive will cost you a lot and ultimately restrict you as to where you go when you're on the islands. Good pair of flippers and a decent full face mask and you're set. I was there for six months and the daily swim was the the best bit. Keeps your eyes out for a Humuhumukununukuapua!

ok..you can do what is called a referral. This means you can do the theory/exams and pool based skills training over here in the UK and complete the open water sessions whilst over there. This is likely to work out to be more expensive than doing the whole course whilst away but you will save some of your holiday time. It will also introduce you to your local dive centre which may be useful if you want to dive over here or need equipment/further training for future holidays etc.So, over to the PH experts...what is the best thing to do, and the best way to do it?
any questions and I'll try to help

This. You can do a referral if you're really averse to diving in the UK but it's really not that bad (even my girlfriend did it) and then you're all set for your holiday. You also have the benefit of training in harder conditions - less feeling because of gloves, poorer vis, etc that you'll find it a doddle and be far more confident in clear warm water.Dont waste your holiday with exams or practical tests. Plus you really don't want to waste a couple of days of holiday faffing about with PADI certification stuff.
or if you dont want to do much diving, you can do the intro to diving..... cost me $30 and it was 30mins in the pool and 45mins at 14m an hour later just off Lombok.
Was the best $30 i ever spent.
Suppose you could do 2/3 different dive schools and hey presto that is all you need to pay rather than the padi.
