poor bd got eaten less than 20m from shore at a popular Perth beach this morning - his son (24yo) heard him yell, saw threshing fins and blood in the water and all they have found so far are a couple of shredded bits of wetsuit.

Also in Sydney today a 5m Great White was circling some Kayakers just waiting for a light lunch - luckily that didn't eventuate.

Mate of mine in Abingdon goes surfing in Cornwall on New Years Day most years(wearing a "dry suit"!) and I always reckoned he's mad.. maybe not so after all?

To put thinkgs into perspective, less than 50 miles south of that, 2 people were killed in a traffic crash. While probably more people went motoring than swimming, the fact is that most motorists are not intent on killing when they go about their motoring.

Bear in mind the number of people that use the water compared with the number of people that use the road. I'm sure that surfing's more risky than driving, if not for the sharks but for rip currents, sharp rocks and just plain old fashioned drowning.
