Mine are illuminated by a single bulb, in a holder with numerous little light transmitting tubes going to the instruments. On mine this bulb holder is tucked up by the left hand side of the heater and accessed behind the trim in the left hand foot well.
Any help?

Mine - have separate bulbs. I'm going to strip it all apart today and have a fumble about and see if there's a loose connection. It's so annoying!!

Try the rheostat on the steering column.

The track on mine (1985 390 - Rover column) has died and if it isn't fully turned - I get no dash lights.

Hi Guys - just an update. Well I had a good fumble with the wiring going into the fuse board and behind the gauges all to no avail. Checked the switch connections and they were ok. I'm going to try one last thing later today which is the wiring in the boot. I chopped out the electric aerial with the result the lights went all bandy! I'm going to re-connect it again just to see what happens. The feed for the dash is on the same circuit as the R/Hand boot light so let's see if theat changes anything suffice to say that it was all working nicely until I spliced the aerial feed....There must be an easier way......!!!

I've been trying to sort out my gauge lighting as well today. Like others my potentiometer has packed in and only operated on max setting (albeit only supplying 9v instead of the 12v at the other pot terminal)

My gauges are so dim i can't see any of the larger dials (speedo and rev counter) at night which is pretty risky with all the speed cameras about!

I bypassed the pot with a switch and installed new bulbs and.... they're still crap.

I found that 3 superbright leds wired in series (in a trianglular formation) with a tag made from stripboard all bound with a piece of heatshirnk fits the bulb holder perfectly and supplies a much better illumination of the dial face.

What a pain eh? Well I had a fumble and am resigned to the fact that I will need the assistance of an Auto Sparky to resolve the issue. Just out of interest - I replaced my original bulbs for the gauges with Green LEDs which are brilliant before the lights went out and they do look nice and bright. You can also get the LEDs in white too which will make a massive difference if you have white background lights...
