La Stampa has been wrong before but here's hoping they've got an inside line on this one. I just don't see why they should be the first to know about it.

First to know about it? You're joking right?

Even I posted about this one last Wednesday, and it has been 'certain' for about a week now.

However, it isn't yet confirmed, as far as I know, but strongly rumoured. Button and Senna in the cars. So, if confirmed, despite Rubens' strong lobbying at the factory last week, doen't look good for him, unless he goes testing.

La Stampa says 'has rescued', not that he might, is in talks, or has asked for the full inventory. 'Has rescued' is a lot different from 'my best bet is'.

A bit left field though - simply to buy Senna a seat? Surely he could've simply thrown a load of money at Mateschitz and bought STR? Cheaper and simpler way of buying into all that IP invested via Newey? Anyone not tieing Honda up to an engine supply deal for the next 5 years has also got to be mad.

Anyway it'll flush the real players out.

STR is a risk, as it relies on Red Bull to even get on the grid. Honda have been working on the 2009 car for some time; they might have a pretty good car waiting in the wings for next season. If need be, there are engine supplies out there to be bought, too.

There are lots of reasons why investing in the Honda team could be a better bet than jumping into STR both short and long term.

Surely though better to buy an STR, built around the Ferrari package than chop a Honda about to install another (Cosworth?) powertrain? Honda's 2009 car will only work as a complete package out of the box, which is what a prospective purchaser will want.

When you've got $60bn kicking about, you just buy the very best that's available I 'spose!

I still reckon they'll have IP for the Honda engines worked into the deal to be built by an independent.

My understanding (which may be wrong) is that the engines will be available for the 2009 car, although not necessarily branded as Honda units. Due to the tightness of the regulations, I would imagine all the current V8s are packaged in a very similar way, anyway. Take a look at how the Red Bull was adapted from the Renault to suit the Ferrari in the STR, for example.

Why sould it? The 2008 car didn't work straight out of the box. Or at all.

He must have an engine deal and I would assume with Honda. He waited until after FOTA beat Mosley on the single engine proposition.

If Cosworth do come up with an engine then it has got to be a neat package that can be fitted without much problem to various cars. Isn't the main problem with installations the ancilliaries? Where to put the bits?

Let's hope it is true and brings the grid back to just one team less than last season's start.

The main question is not the engine package but the package that Bernie has offered the team.

The Ross Brawn influence is why.

Mnd you, a big risk there - one huge chunk of any prospective buyer's decision must be based on the Ross Brawn factor - and I'm not sure that'd be a reason for me to stick my hand in my pocket!

Posted on Autosport today:

"Slim one of four speaking to Honda"

"Honda Racing are in talks with four potential buyers including wealthy Mexican businessman Carlos Slim, autosport.com has learned, but no deal has yet been completed."

and

"Italian newspaper La Stampa also wrote that Slim had agreed a deal that would see the team line-up on the grid in 2009 with Jenson Button and Bruno Senna as their drivers.

However, although talks are progressing well, it is understood that the situation remains unchanged from how it was just before Christmas, with public confirmation of the progress of the buyout discussions unlikely before the New Year."

The actual wording of the denial is very specific:

"The Telmex Team can confirm that Carlos Slim Helu has not bought the Honda F1 team nor is holding any negotiations to do so. Therefore all information related to this subject has no basis and is completely false."

It seems to say specifically that Carlos isn't in the frame. It leaves the field open for his son to be the instigator.

It reminds me of a man who once said:

"I never had sex with that woman."
