Very true.

I don't know where rip off Britain comes from. It is same living costs in France, Germany. Is a lot more expensive in quite a few European countries.

I know a few people who have businesses based in the UK, as best place for tax on smaller businesses. Yet they live in Italy, France, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium.

If rent and rates were lowered then I could lower my prices, before the recession my net profit was 6% not much leeway to lower prices there.

The major problem in Britain is that the British want excellent service in a plush environment but only want to pay the cost price of the goods.

People will pay what they have to pay to get what they want. They aren't going to tell retailers to drop their prices. it doesn't work like that.

I'm really not surprised Zavvi has gone under. What sort of noodnink would pay £14 for a Cd that you can get for £8.99 online?

Very true, unless its big ticket "designer brand" stuff, most any retail shops in the rest of the world (give or take a few exceptions) are not much more that warehouses with shelves rather than swanky retail outlets that the UK has.

I think there is a lot of truth in that.

Equally however, I think a lot of suppliers want to charge prices that should command excellent service whilst offering poor to average service at best.

I think he is implying that Tesco rip people off. Which is only true because people brought class warfare to supermarkets and simply will not be seen entering an Aldi that sells the same products for less.

The government (not the current one obviously) would be quite capable of controlling Tesco with anti-monopoly laws. It would be a completely different situation to OPEC.
