Are there any rallies/tours for Kitcars or specials ??
Discussion
Just wondered if there were any tours or road rallies for kitcars or specials ?? I know there was one called the 'Liege' or something but are there any others ??
I'm not talking about proper races but journeys through different countries with 'like minded folk' (people who sleep with spanners under their pillow).

I would love to do one of the Guild of Motor Endurance trips, they look great. Hopefully in the next few years if i can find a passenger. Just bear in mind the
£900 per crew price do not include getting to the start in the South of France and back, all fuel ect. Trust me, it all adds up.....
If you look at this months Totalkitcar magazine, we did a write up to encourage people to just go and do it, but on the cheap! 9 of us did it together, and did 10 days for £1,000 including fuel! Well, some of them did... For our £1,000 we drove the French Vosges Mountains (awesome, where Sebastian Loeb taught himself to drive) , Swiss passes Grimselpass, Olufpass, Furkapass, Fleulapass into Italy for the Stelvio Pass (Basically the Top Gear famous route of Davos to Stelvio they did in the Porsche GT3, N24 Aston and Lamborghini Superleggera) . Then onto Monte Carlo to drive the GP track, then about 6 Montecarlo Rally stages including the infamous Col de Turini. Then the Route Napoleon, Milau Bridge, Verdayne Gorge (where Clarkson raced the climber / basejumper in the Audi RS4) Claermont Ferrand, and onto some high speed passes at the pits at Reims. Oh, and we partied hard! Mega trip, i am just trying to say do not be scared of just trying to do a trip yourself of trying to rope a few mates in to join you. It will work out much cheaper, considering the price of the Euro at the moment.

Sign up to TOUR7 and sit and wait for the emails... There's a couple of tours being planned at the moment. It's not all Se7ens. Any spaceframed low production car like your Ginetta are welcome.

That CCC tour is typical. I have used CCC many times (about 5), mostly good reports but they let us down badly on a Champagne tour. Tour guide drove us for 3 hours to a Champagne factory that was a highlight but SHUT, then said "BYE, got to go back to Dover URGENT. Make your own way the rest of the trip". Nice. We then saw him tucked up in a smart Cafe round the corner with the rich couple, after checking us 12 into a manky one, then about 50 places in front of us in a queue for the Piper Heidsink Champagne tour! Knob. Bear in mind you are paying them £1,600 to drive roads that are FREE. You are just paying for flash hotels. You will probobly spend another £800 plus or minus a few quid for fuel, tolls, spending money ect. I bet two people could do that exaxt route for less than half, thats £1,200 cheaper!
I just remembered another story about CCC, THIS IS TOTALLY TRUE I SWEAR! We all did a trackday in France with them, and the Guide did the safety briefing. He banged on about 5 times the need for a crash helmet on circuit, something we all know obviously. I KID YOU NOT, he and his wife pulled onto the circuit and were imediately black flagged, as HE was wering a pushbike foam helmet and his wife was wearing a Yellow Bob the Builder hardhat! Priceless! The thought of a week with them should be interesting.

When I get my next toy car I'm going to enter another. I came 3rd in a 24-hour Welsh Endurance event in 2000 but that was entirely due to my co-pilot who actually started the event with me in the passenger seat puking repeatedly for the next 16 hours (every time we stopped the car so I could lean out). Food poisoning I reckon. Anyway, he did all that without a working navigator. If anyone wants to have any further deatils about the GOME events I have done them all since 2001.

I'm not too good as a passenger, especially if I cannot keep my eyes on the road. So no reading maps and stuff for me. Where does that leave me? Do you have to share the driving? I never really worked it out last time.

Doesn't look like I'll be able to do it this year, so maybe next. One question though, would you recommend any modifications to the car? Sump guard and the like?If anyone wants to have any further deatils about the GOME events I have done them all since 2001.

Take care with GOME. very, very "clicky". newcomers, seemingly are not made aware of this. The organisers don't help matters either. I "did" the Spanish Tour in 2007, or I went, but was a DNS as I had food poisoning. They never once asked how I was, or offered even a minimal rebate. Took the money, paid well in advance and in full, Take Care with them.!!
I can only speak from my experiences with GOME which have been entirely satisfactory.
The event I took part in,Liege Targa 1999,was an absolute blast from start to finish, the "clique" factor mentioned is only due to people having done events previously knowing each other already, after a few days we were treated as on of the gang by most people, however there were some on the event who seemed to have trouble getting on with anybody, just like life in general. One or two of them were just plain obnoxious and ostracised themselves, either by their attitude to others or by boasting about how expensive their( bought ,not self-built) engines/cars etc; were and decrying those(the vast majority) with smaller budgets and no rich Daddy to buy their cars.
The competitors are all similar, but different,I still run into guys who have done these events at shows and generally, there is a bond between participants, having endured the same problems and hardships as each other.
Make no mistake, these events are challenging,VERY well organised, plenty of friendly rivalry with their roadbooks second to none in my experience, the organisers taking their duties and responsibilities very seriously indeed.
I suffered a serious back problem before one event, forcing me to withdraw, and my deposit is still being held for me when I hopefully recover enough to enter again.
As for entry fees being lost due to the entrant being unable to participate, would you expect a refund on a holiday if you cancelled at the last minute?,the event is no different,if they had no reserves to take over your entry, why should a refund be given, all the hotels etc;would have been booked well in advance.

Your probably right about the refund in general. But the total cost paid included their profit, why make profit on a no show ? this could and should have been offered as a refund. To ask about their Clients welfare would show some compassion. They did not. They called me on my mobile too see if I was coming later. Then much later sent a reminder for the 2008 rally. Take care.

It’s a shame you never made the start, usually it’s the car that breaks rather than the crew. With regard to "clicky" I think you need to "get back in the saddle" and enter another GOME event. It’s always difficult with new entrants, bit like arriving as a couple at a party and not knowing anyone. You are best to just wade in, or as we have all experienced break down and everyone will help. If you could have seen the night stop half way through the last event people hammering a wing back into shape, spares being used from all cars.
The refund thing is covered in the regs, when it’s so late I don’t think anyone is able to get money back as it has all been booked and paid for.
Anyway it would be good to see you on one soon.
