Which AV Amp for £2-300?

I have a set of Tannoy EFX speakers, xbox 360, Tivo and Samsung Plasma, would like some expert opinions on what amp to get please?

I have always had Yamaha amps. See here for a budget line up. Apparently Onkyon offer excellent value for money with a quality line up. In the past I have bought top opf the range amps but now I tend to go for the cheaper ones as you don't need 200W x 6 to watch a film and most of the features are sound DSP effects, which I never used.

£300 is more than enough for a reasonable setup I think

Id go with an Onkyo, Yamaha or Denon.

Find a local specialist and go and have a listen.

If you can find a Onkyo TXSR606 for £300 it is a cracking bit of kit. Think they are still ~£325 - £350 though.

i dont have one (i have a yamaha) but the hifi installers we use at work swear by them, and they do some quite stunning installs

Thanks guys, thanks for the recommendations, the onkyo although a great amp looks a bit 70's and although it would match my wardrobe , not sure it would go in the front room!

It will do a great job of replacing your central heating in that room though!

I bought a Yamaha DSPAX763 a few weeks back and it is a cracking unit. Defo worth a listen alongside the Denon AVR1909 to sort out your own preference for sound. Both £299 at Richer Sounds (if you have a VIP club card you can get the Yammy for 279).

I have an Onkyo TSX505 - can't fault it one bit.

Dont think you can get this particular model anynmore, but it's replacement should be well within your budget

Me too. I have a 2001(?) vintage SR4200 - 5.1, DTS etc. The sound is stunning - I simply have no need to replace it.

Another Yamaha AX763 owner, I paid £340 for it a few months ago but now down to around £270, massively capable amp for very little money.

That Yamaha looks great. For future proofing I'd definitely go for something that supports audio over HDMI. A lot of cheaper A/V amps only support switching of HDMI but the Yamaha linked above supports audio and upconversion from any analogue input.

They do it in silver as well which makes it look a little better. It's not a work of art though :P
