Me and Mrs R5 went to a stupidly busy Tesco this morning for the weekly shop plus a load of stuff for the New Year, we have plenty of alcohol at home so I added just a couple of large bottles of Peroni to the trolley.

As we loaded up the conveyor at the till the check out woman asked for ID so my Mrs (24yrs old) showed her driving license for which she accepted (Mrs R5 was paying for the shop) the woman then turned to me (27yrs old) and asked for my ID I said I had none but I wasn't buying anything anyway, she then said that we both had to produce ID or we wouldn't be served.

So I asked her how she can serve parents with ID as the kids will clearly be under age - she had no answer.

We loaded everything up on the belt and let her scan around half, then politely told her to shove all the shopping up her arse and walked off.

I normally sympathize with shop staff but sometimes they really should just use their brain.

When the till operator is liable personally for a £2000 fine if she serves someone underage whilst earning her minimum wage what else is likely to happen?

Is this madness some Tesco thing or part of some new government initiative to save us from ourselves?

This has cropped up quite a few times this year in the P&P and it always seems to be Tesco that is the culprit.

I'm sure your mrs didnt really mind being asked for id with the possibility that she is under 18!

They never seem to ask in Aldi... but then again thats just like shopping on holiday - not many people speaking English in there either! hehe

Would it not have been easier to ask her to get a supervisor to clear up the situation rather than losing the plot?

A most excellent choice.

And often 3 for £5 at Sainsburys for future reference.

Wouldn't help, the supervisor would just ask you for ID as well.

The checkout staff would be liable for the £80 fixed penalty- Isuspect Tesco like to remind their staff quite often.

Stupid rule. Been caught out a few times. Me and the missus pop to waitrose to get dinner and some drinks for the evening.

She doesn't bring bag, I've got cash. I get ID'd, fair enough. Then she does! She doesn't have it. stupid.

It should be discretion for the other non paying parties. I have dinner and 4 pack of beer. I could understand her getting ID'd if I have a bottle of Vodka and JD, jonnys and lube...

I know in Morrisons the other day the bint said to me 'I know you're over 18 [which I am], but I don't think you're over 25 [which I'm not] so I'm going to have to ID you', so I think it's becoming more common... and yes ultimately the government is to blame.

I thought it was just my youthfull good looks - or maybe not - 27 years old, stood at the checkout in Tesco with my visibly pregnant 25 year old wife - asked for ID.

Of course my photo on my driving license I was 17, had long hair and was pre- my osteotomy - she didn't bother querying it even though it looks nothing like me now.

I'm 29 and I was asked for ID the other week in Asda, I'm even going bald and have a shorn bonce. It's a pain in the arse but I'm enjoying it whilst I can.
I didn't actually have any ID on me other than a few cards and my work ID, the woman seemed happy enough with it and let me buy my booze.

I then spent the rest of the evening in a drunken haze, life is good.
