Drove my first e gear Gallardo today it was an 05 SE. I have driven manuals before but wanted to see what the e gear was like. The paddles were easy to use and intuitive, unlike the PDK system on the Porsche I recently drove.

However in Auto mode the gear changes were not very smooth, is this how it is supposed to be? On my Porsche gearchanges are seemless but this was a bit like my brothers old 645ci which had an SMG gearbox and could be quite clunky around town.

My friend who has had the car for over a year says it has always been like this...

Never use the auto mode on e-gear or F1 on a Ferrari --- they always change you way to early imo and in traffic you get stuck jumping between 1st and 3rd

As a more general statement the Lambo e-gear changes always feel jerky - it's by design, thats what the owners like

Afterall the Ferrari F1 system is made by the same people - but Ferrari have smoothed it out

IMO if you are the driver, the Lambo system is more fun, if you are the passenger it gives you a sore neck

Thanks Doug, makes sense, pretty much what my friend was saying.

I think I am too used to Porsches and Mercs, who have a different objective with their gearboxes.

these are manual boxes with semi auto clutch control, unlike mercs and (i think?) porsche which are just auto boxes with switch controls on the steering. totally different kettle of fish

That would make sense, however the PDK gearbox I drove on the Porsche was fantastic in both auto mode and tip and that is supposed to be regarded as manual but the controls take some getting used too.

I completely agree about the PDK gearbox. I thought it was brilliant. I didn't get to drive it, but got a 10 minute spin in one a few months back. I was very surprised how smooth it was. I was even more surprised to hear that most people didn’t like it. I’m quite friendly with my local dealer and he was saying they had been getting very mixed feedback about them. I think it's amazing that people were disapointed with the PDK but still buy e-gear and sportshift systems.

ok the pdk box is new and is a double clutch clever gizmo box. hence the smoothness no doubt!
