New LCD TV woes - normal or just a duff one?

Dad's just bought a Pioneer 37" LCD TV - KRL37V for those who these things matter to - and is now really wishing he hadn't.
In anything other than a pitch black room it's useless, colours are washed out yet the screen is so dark that trying to view it with a bit of daylight in the room makes it look opaque and lifeless. Mum describes it as trying to watch through several layers of cling film! Brightness adjustment from lowest to highest setting seems to make very little difference on screen.
I'd read this was supposedly a half decent set (at the price it should be bloody brilliant IMO!) but they want rid of it already.
So - is there a hidden setting we're missing, is this likely a duff set or is this simply what you get with LCD? They are considering trying to talk to the vendor about changing it for a Plasma but on here I keep reading that anything under 42 LCD is the way forward.

If you need any more convincing that it is broken, go into a shop and look at theirs. Sounds faulty to me anyway.
I popped into a place on the way home, they were playing a black and white film - not that helpful for gauging colour 
though I thought the blacks were very grey, not exactly great contrast.sounds like its broken.
Pioneer don't make there own LCD they use someonelse's panel....and theyar4e now using Panasonics plasma panels on there plasmas(which is a good thing).
IMHO buy a Panasonic at least youn know that it is them that make it and the 85/800 panels are superb products.

Don't they need running in still?
I got both a 26 and 42 inch Panasonic LCD/Plasma in that order.
Was very dissapointed with the 42" until I had watched it for a couple of days - much better picture now than when I first turned it on, the 26" that I have watched less of is still improving.
Or am I totally wrong?

I must admit, when I was looking around for an LCD set for my folks, most of the TV shops had them set out in rows so that you couldn't get the proper viewing angle without sitting on the floor. This meant that standing above the centreline made them all look rather washed out. Most LCDs are meant to be viewed from straight on, or below the centreline. Almost without exception, the signal source was utterly rubbish too!

When was this? I've got a relatively cheap Sony LCD and the picture is the same from pretty much every angle.I think every LCD can be viewed from 178 degrees these days and it will still be a nice crisp picture.
