I'm finally on the prowl for a new telly. The above is "only" 720p. Is this a critical downpoint even though it's a Sony?

Depends what you are doing with it.
Watching Freeview? Not going to notice the difference.
Watching DVDs? Ditto
Watching HD? Possibly, depending on content.
Running a PC? Quite likely, as the resolution is quite different (1366x768 vs 1920x1080)
Picked up one of those for the Parent's a few months ago, knowing that for what they are going to use it for it is going to make sod all difference.
My next TV would be a 1080p set, as I run SkyHD/360/PC with my TV, but if it wasn't for that, then I would go for a decent Plasma as I'm looking >40".
Good set that, though, and I'd have that or the Samsung 32a456.
