I'm finally on the prowl for a new telly. The above is "only" 720p. Is this a critical downpoint even though it's a Sony?

Depends what you are doing with it.

Watching Freeview? Not going to notice the difference.
Watching DVDs? Ditto
Watching HD? Possibly, depending on content.
Running a PC? Quite likely, as the resolution is quite different (1366x768 vs 1920x1080)

Picked up one of those for the Parent's a few months ago, knowing that for what they are going to use it for it is going to make sod all difference.

My next TV would be a 1080p set, as I run SkyHD/360/PC with my TV, but if it wasn't for that, then I would go for a decent Plasma as I'm looking >40".

Good set that, though, and I'd have that or the Samsung 32a456.

Thanks for that, we saw the Sony in the shop and it looked about the right size and feel. I just saw the figure "1080p" on other tellies wrote every where and worried a bit. Freeview and DVD certainly, not that bothered about HD yet. Just want to upgrade from the 21" Hitachi CRT!
