Renting a room; regional variations

How much do people charge in your area to rent a room with shared use of the bathroom/lounge/kitchen? I was up in Edinburgh yesterday and my student son is paying £420 a month (including bills) for a 15 x 10 room albeit in a lovely Georgian house 10 minutes walk from Princes steet ( and a one hour bus ride from his part time work). Even so it seemed pricey. Looking in my local paper in Yorkshire that kind of rent would rent him a 2/3 bed house here and a room in a shared house would be about £250 a month.
Also, he has no contract of any sort. Without a conract can't they just chuck him out? Is that common in Scotland or is the landlord working a flanker? The last place he was in where he also had no contract witheld £200 of his deposit because he had worked part time for some of the time he was there and they said they wanted £50 a month for the council tax although the landlord lived there and was working so should have been paying CT anyway. I am betting the council didn't see the £200!

350 a month in Edinburgh here. Same set up, albeit a tenement rather than Georgian, and off Leith Walk - about 20 minutes walk to Princes St. Don't have a contract either, but I'm sharing the house with the landlady so it's not really a big deal.
As for the CT, if he was working, then the bill would have been appropriate for 2 people. Tis only if you are claiming CT benefit that it would be halved.

Brother charges £350 a month for the language students he has, they get all their food and bills included in it and its basically an open house for them, only the lounge is off limits unless invited.

Anywhere from £200 upwards in Belfast, depends on what part of town really.
Somewhere decent would be around £3-400, or you could rent a whole house or flat to yourself for £400+ within easy commuting distance of the city centre.

£424 per month. This includes all bills and CT. I'm living in a shared house. I get to park my car in a Garage. The room i have is huge with a walk in wardrobe and my own en suite....
This is in Durham centre....though the students in the area tend to ensure higher rental prices than the surrounding areas.

We have a shared house in Manchester. Brand new house filled with brand new mod-cons. In a nice area with five people sharing and an HMO contract drawn up. Rent depends on room size but varies from £65-£80 a week; so an average of around £300 a month. Includes broadband and TV license - we pay gas, electric and water. Better deal than most students get though, as my parents own the house.
