Anyone experienced this? it only happens now and then but always after the throttle has been at idle, then when applying some pressure to the pedal resistance has to be overcome....resulting in aggressive take offs

I had that in my old car and couldn't be bothered to do anything about it.... got used to it fairly quickly by just keeping the pedal moving very slightly when idling. Although I'm sure it is very simply fixed, I was getting rid of the car anyway. --- big help aren't I!

That sadly doesn't work.... just about the only problem for which it is not a viable solution!

Well it worked in my old Transit as it was more of an on/off switch before.

Is your Beemer a cable or fly by wire throttle?

If the OP's profile is acurate it will be fly by wire. Thinking about it if WD40 has worked for Sniff Diesel on other cars it might be worth trying! But consider using GT85 instead which is like WD40 but more lubricating (or so I was once told).

It's definitely cable operated, it feels like the pedal is sticking rather than the cable

Most probably the butterfly in the throttle body. Remove the air intake pipe and give a good squirt of carb cleaner (engine not running ). You could also hold the butterfly open and use an old tooth brush on the sides to clean deposits off.

I stand corrected. Probably why I didn't manage to fix mine!
