I love decent quality beer in a big way. There's a long running thread on real ale (which I also adore) but thought I might bring to the attention of fellow beer aficionados another fine beer style - black lager. Generally served at a lower temperature than ale, and obviously more 'gassy' being a lager, this beer style is quite popular in Germany and other parts of central Europe.

A few of my favourites:

Kostritzer

I was first acquainted with this magnificant beer when in Monteray, California last year. It was on draught then and tasted of nectar. No such luck in finding a tap of it behind a bar in the UK so far. I did manage to hunt down bottles of it at Borough Market, though. Am currently enjoying it now. Glass pre-chilled in fridge, beer placed in freezer for 30 minutes to get it super cold, just before the point that any ice crystals begin to form. Perfect. drink

Budweiser Budvar Dark

Available in bottles and in selected places on draught. Makes my day when I find a pub selling it. Like at The Chequers in Farningham, Kent. smile

Zero Degrees Black Lager

Brewed in-house at their bar in Blackheath, London and served on draught. Well worth a journey up to SE3 to sample a pint. Or four.

Any other fans of black lager around?

I had some Black Lager beer in prague, I found it to be quite tasty but strong , this was confirmed when on a tour of the brewery the 'Brew Master' tried to give a little talk about the process and could hardly stand up drunk

If anyone is in the area, our local http://www.crown.oakengates.net/ serves Budvar Black on draught.

Very good stuff.
