Wiring a Telephone Socket

[Glassman]

-	1. GR with white ring		6. White with GR ring	-
-	2. BL with white ring		5. White with BL ring	-
-	3. OR with white ring		4. White with OR ring	-

One socket (IDC terminals) and I've pushed the cable right down into the terminals with the wossname (pokerer-in-thingymajig).

Cable is one of two coming from the main (box) coming in (one goes upstairs to a flush-fitted socket). This end is downstairs going into another room, under the floor.

I've followed the wiring diagram, but no dial tone / broadband signal.

I'm sure you only need two of those wires connected for it to work. They're all straight through aren't they? So are the wires at the other end the same colour and in the same places.

You have the correct poker thingy?

My dad had one in his toolbox, never got used though.
I'd guess there is a bad contact inside the plug as yet

Ish. 1 pair for a phone line Ie two cables. The problem is which two and what sequence. I am not that au fait with phone wiring at home as have only done framework but ata guess i think it will be the green pair into 7 and 8.

Ok just had a thought are you simply trying to put in an extension?

Solid Blue to 2, blue and white to 5 and solid orange to 3.

For an extension you need to use terminals 2 3 and 5, 3 being the ringer wire... Make sure they match all the way through..

Master socket just needs the A and B leg conected because it has a capacitor for the ringing....

If you are referring to an additional telephone socket try this,

disconnect everything apart from the two Blues (term 2 & 5) check you have a good connection (and dial tone on the other phone) then connect all the other wires one by one. IIRC you only need three wires for extn. phones to work. The 2 Blues on 2 & 5 + one other (although I cannot remember which one)

Quick q. I assume you do phone wiring of some sort. Surely you only need two as from what i recall i have never needed 3 on any of the lines i have dealt with? Or is that simply a difference between home and office telephony?

In the old days - when we used bells, that was true.

2 & 5 in this digital age only required.

This assumes that your master socket isn't dicky.

BT make a nice "broadband master socket" these days with built-in filter.

It works miles better in marginal line/signal areas.

Plug the router directly into that, you'll get more speeeeed.

haha fair enough. I am simply used to krone blocks and multi core and even that i dont deal with anymore now its simply cat5.
