Trapped nerve in back.
Discussion
Who needs to go to the Dr's when you have the P&P?
My GF appears to be suffering from a trapped nerve in her lower back and is in a fair amount of pain and discomfort at the moment. Is there anything that can be done to ease the condition before she sees a Doctor? Even the strongest pain relief is not making a great deal of difference and unfortunatley she can't take time off work.

Funny you mention this, I have had back pain for the last week and a bit. Went back to the docs today, they insist it is a strain, I got hold of a physio today and am heading over there tomorrow for some more investigation. The thing is not to leave it, get it looked into as much as possible. I have a history of back pains and twinges but this time it feels different.

An American guy I worked with for a while had horrible back pains for several years, but he eventually got shown a back board device that sort of laid/hung you upside down, relieving the stress on your spine. There is a whole load of gumf on the web about it, different ways it can benefit you, but my buddy soon made a full recovery and has no more back pains.

I've seen them advertised on the web in the UK, Ebay, all sorts. Might be worth a try?

Having had a quick nose through the web there does appear to be a lot of conflicting advice, mostly conflicting! Unfortunatley there is no quick cure which is what she needs given she is on her feet at work for 10hrs a day.
Best advice, until she is properly assessed, would be to follow the first 3 of these McKenzie back Extension exercises. ( http://www.arshavirshomepage.com/Arshavirs_Homepag... ) The vast majority of "exercise prescription" given out by physios/osteopaths/chiropractors is based on Mckenzie's work and there is overwhelming evidence based research to support it's effectiveness. His book, "Treat Your Own Back" ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Treat-Your-Back-Robin-McKe... )could probably put folk like me out of business if folk splashed out the tenner or so it costs rather than the big bucks they spend to be told the same thing in a clinic.
SWMBO - who this year had major backpain earlier this year which was subsequently diagnosed as a prolapsed spinal disc - says that in her opinion your gf should f
koffski to the GP as soon as and get checked.
Get her pain assessed - if it is 'nerve' / 'neuropathic' type pain then 'Amytryptaline (sp?)' was the only thing that worked for her.
She had done the paracetemol / Co-Codamol route and then played with the prescription meds of Tylex & DF118's to no avail.
Her early visits to the GPs only enabled the pain relief as there was no referral to a rheumatology consultant for some time.
She saw a chirppractor who assessed her before cracking her back first - and that did offer some relief.
The exercises mentioned above are recommended with the best of reasons and intentions - but Missus (should I call her Princess Leia?) thinks that it might be better to find out what you are dealing with first.

Not unless you married your sister young Skywalker!!!!!
Fully appreciate your point on bewaring internet diagnosis, which is why I identified the 3 exercises above is because they are not going to cause aggravation of LBP symptoms.

Thanks for the very helpful advice, I shall point her in the direction of that book, it looks like a tenner very well spent.
She will be off-ski to the GP soon as, in the meantime I am trying to persuade her to go straight to a chiropractor, I don't see the point in fannying around with the NHS waiting for a referral.
