Help!!

Have trawelled through the past postings to find a similar occurance but most seem to be starter motor related.

Went to start my 4.5 yesterday pm to show friends inserted key after disarming immobiliser, fuel pump worked, pressed starter button and she turned over like a good un but just would not fire - apart from a couple of big bangs so have assumed some fuel getting through!

My thoughts were 1) ignition (god help me!) or 2)fuel/air mixture wrong and therefore upsetting the ecu.

Only other clue is that it has taken slightly longer to start but has never actually failed.

Any hints advice gratefully received.

Cheers

Jon

Had you already been out in the car yesterday?

Even though it's cooler now, if you had used the car
already and the engine was hot, it might be related to
the old fuel vaporisation problems?

Have a look at some of the threads like this:
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=46915&f=6&h=0&hw=fuel

Naturally, if you were starting from cold...none of this
applies to you....sorry.

Insterted key? What key? I have been told not to remove the key as this can cause problems. suggest that your ecu is now confused if you are removing key??

I don't remove my key either, but iirc, the handbook says about removing it?

Thanks for the reply guys - I had been out in it on Friday evening and it did start but took some doing.

I have just cleaned out the air filter (full of crud so am awaiting it drying and then will have another go)

Regarding the key I was told that it was ok but that the bezel it sits in can be prone to spinning and therefore destroying the connections to the ignition circuit.

We shall see

Cheers again

Well, cleaned the filter and airbox (god the Cr*p in there!) and...

no difference just churning over, also checked the fuses for good measure but am now stumped, so it could be a case of home start call out and off to Racing Green.

Cheers for the hints though

Ditto - been told by numerous people never to take it out. May replace it with some kind of "kill switch", though, as I don't like people peering through the window possibly being able to see that there's a key still in there.

the bit the silver key plugs into is notorious for coming loose and turning around, breaking the wires behind it, they either get taken out and the wires soldered together or you don't use the silver key at all. I've seen battery cut off switches fitted there too, look neat
