I wonder if the Russians ever think things through...
You are having an argument with the Ukraine about gas prices yet your gas runs through the Ukraine to Europe. To anyone else this is a mutual back scratching issue. They get cheap gas, you get access to the pipe going across their territory. But no, not when it comes to the Russians. They want it all, and they want it now, to quote Queen.
What happens the day Ukraine doesn't want or need Russian gas? I know there must be other pipelines, but if you can't supply Europe via those other pipelines during the row with the Ukraine there must be some question mark over the effectiveness of other pipelines. But what happens when the Ukrainians say "you know your gas you sell to Europe - not through our pipeline thx - or lets see - how about 5 times the going rate?" The cost will be passed onto Europe obviously, but then Europe isn't taking this supply issue lying down either.
You can see that within 20 years Russia won't be able to give gas away because they are so unreliable and have upset all their neighbours.

It is reported that lower oil has put a hitch into the giddy up of Russia's plans. As a result, Putin and company are talking about "setting" gas prices. That sounds a lot like the ball squeezing of Europe many alluded may happen.I wonder if the Russians ever think things through...

Cutting the oil/gas to Ukraine is a political stunt to remind Ukraine of their dependance on Russia, should they get their hopes up about becomming chummy with the west. But you are right- they do need the pipeline, and so do we in western Europe so they darent be too pushy...I wonder if the Russians ever think things through...

Russia is a country run by posturing idiots. Yes, Putin is an old-fashioned strong man who can keep control of the mechanisms of state, but he has no idea how to run a modern state. All he runs is a version of the old Soviet Union with mineral wealth concentrated in the hands of a few and greater freedoms for the people which are irrelevant to most because they have no money.
