New Year Celebrations cancelled in Dubai, UAE

Fair play to Sheik Mo for doing this. Whilst businesses will suffer as it is a "rip-off" period, it is minor compared to the suffering that is going on in Gazza.

Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered the cancellation of all forms of celebrations marking the New Year in Dubai emirate, as an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

In support of the Palestinians in Gaza, who are enduring all kinds of killing, destruction and displacement by the Israeli military machinery, Shaikh Mohammad instructed all concerned authorities in Dubai to put this order in place and take necessary procedures to circulate the decision to all concerned parties.

I know it does not affect you peeps in the UK, but over here, its pretty serious.

What's pretty serious out there, the Isreali bombardment of Gaza, or the parties, why is it not serious here?

I think you'll find that private functions/parties etc are still allowed to proceed.

We have very strict "anti Israeli" policies here. If you have an Israeli stamp in your passport it is 99.99% that you will not be allowed in.

All Construction Contracts have clauses in them whereby you are NOT allowed to have any associations with any suplliers/contracting operating in Israel.

Most GCC Countries have strong affiliations with Gazza, Lebanon, Jordan etc.

my man in the UAE was upset also upon hearing the news but he's just had it confirmed that private functions are still okay to proceed so his party in the desert can continue.

they are more worried about being alighed with the west too much and thus becomming the next target (like Bali).

Most Middle East countries - UAE, Syria, Iran, Jordan etc do not recognise Israel as a country so will not permit people with Israel's stamps in passport to enter their countries - even if you've only been there for a holiday. You can, on asking, get the Israeli immigration authorities to stamp a separate piece of paper with your entry/exit which you can keep with your passport and discard later.

Whilst he is perfectly able to do this (cancel NYE celebrations) it does seem at the very least inconsistant, there was no similar ruling when Lebanon was being pulverised let alone when the Iraqis were blowing each other up at a horrendous rate.
It is also causing total chaos with none of the establishments that were going to throw parties able to establish what they can or cannot do.
Am also reluctant to venture out since the cops have said they will stop people celebrating outside which will cause traffic chaos there could also be demonstrations in support of the palestinians that could further complicaate issues.
Personally I would keep any house parties VERY quiet, one call from a pissed off neighbour could lead to a trip to the cells especially if everyone in the house does not have a booze license.

A certain UAE mobile telecoms company refused to include Israel in the list of international call countries fortheir billing system as "Israel doesn't exist" ....

When are the US/UK/UN going to bring Israel into line? Once again, they are getting away with barbarity on a scale that would bring reprisals if it was carried out by anyone else and then we are all supposed to sympathise when they get bombed. Their behaviour and the complcicity of the US and other western governments is responsible for about 90% of terrorism. s.

There are a lot of rumourrs concerning the health of certain palace occupants and if I am putting my tin foil hat on then that scenario makes more sense than this very sudden support for the Palestinians that has never been forthcoming in this form before.

Thats what I heard too or that one of said Palace Occupants had suddenly developed a hole in him i.e. bullet, but I don't believe that (tin foil hat on)

A lot of them still do, but it is no longer required.
