Hello all, I'm currently looking to purchase a 07- Mini Cooper S. I would preferably prefer a JCW however seing the price with which some people are asking I may do the add on's myself bit by bit. What I was wondering if anyone has a picture of the stock Cooper S exhaust and airbox in comparison to the JCW exhausts and airbox so when I go to see a few examples, I can tell the difference. There are a few in auctions, so being able to ask the owner wouldn't be possible :P
Would appreciate the help, many thanks.

you dont need pictures as the JCW air box has the JCW badge on it and the exhaust tips have it scribed on to them too.

The standard s exhaust the tail pipes come from one box and the JCW has a tail pipe from each box. The air box on the JCW also has a valve at the back so it can draw air from the scuttle panel.

The JCW also has badges front and read or the car, an intercooler cover which is silver and not black, an engine rocker cover badge with the JCW engine number, the cylinder head starts with a 50**** number and you should see blue injectors and white on the stock s.

there are two variants,

the early jcw with apparently 200bhp and the later with 210bhp the 200bhp had the stock S air box and white injectors where as the 210bhp had the blue injectors and the air box

Although the factory JCW uses the same airbox as the MCS somewhat confusingly.

Another quick question, on a review I read it says a JCW from new has "enforced pistons, and larger injector etc.) so when people add the airbox/exhaust/ecu-remap onto their standard MCS does that mean it still isn't as good as a factory JCW? Or have I got that all wrong haha!

The MCS Works conversion won't produce as much power/torque as the factory version and misses out on the trick electronic differential that's supposed to mimic a slippy diff but whether you'd notice I'm not sure. Certainly the engine in the factory version is 'stronger' with the reinforced pistons, different valves and turbo but remember that other goodies such as air con/traction control are fitted as standard on the factory version.

The LSD was only fitted on 06 plate though! it was an option on all cooper S and JCW.

The R53 JCW conversion is the same as the factory exception that it is not done in the factory. All valves are the same as the S. There was no "slippy diff" ever electronically fitted though there was DSC which is the electronic option. The pistons are the same on all MCS and JCW as are all the engine internals. even the GP has the same internals as the S! there is no way of a different turbo as it doesn't have a turbo but a blower which is indeed different.

Note; the car will only come with air con if you have the chilli pack which was an extra.

There was two versions of the JCW and if you have the stock air box it is not a factory JCW as they only came on facelift cars which is 54 plate onwards with 210. the cars with the stock air box only have 200.

I think there is some confusion on here about the JCW R53 (old) and the R56 (new)

As I have stated above is gospel and there was no other work gone into the JCW, the new JCW has more engine work involved.

To repeat the JCW conversion and factory have the following different to the S

  • air box
  • injectors
  • blower
  • intercooler cover
  • ECU map
  • Exhaust
  • Badges
  • Cylinder head
Also note the normal 210Bhp JCW will only make 195Bhp on average, mine makes 193.5Bhp!

We're discussing the R56, not the R53.
