a friend has a 2002 mini cooper s, he has fitted different alloys with non runflat tyres.
these alloys have been fitted for over 6 months now, very recently the runflat light has come on and continuously flashes.

1. any ideas how it works?
2. any ideas what the flashing means?

many thanks for any info,

On our 54' plate MCS, post setting pressures you hold the run-flat button down as you turn the car on, holding it until the run-flat light comes on. You should then release the button and drive a few miles until the light turns off - during this time the system will have learnt the rotational speeds of the wheels.

Regardless, check the handbook!

Press and hold button under handbrake

Turn ignition to position 2

runflat light come on then, go off for a second and come back on in yellow

as soon as it comes back on release the button and wait

the light will stay on for upto 20 seconds

Calibration takes place stationary

once the light is out the system is set.

only 5(e60) and 7(e65) series require driving to calibrate.

I changed my wheels and tyres. Now had non-runflats for nearly 2 years.

Amazingly (or not!) the runflat indicator still works with non-runflat tyres. About 18 months ago the runflat indicator began flashing while I was on the motorway. Was a couple of minutes from my destination so parked up and inspected my tyres. I had a screw in the near side rear tyre but tyre still appeared fully inflated. Decided I would deal with it by way of my trusty can of Tyre Weld upon finishing work. Came out a couple of hours later ~ tyre was totally flat. I was really happy with the early warning from the indicator as I'd parked in a position where I wouldn't have seen the flat tyre and would not have known until I'd tried to drive. As it was I knew it was there, jacked the car up, inject can of tyre weld, job's a good un.

So tell your friend to do a good inspection of the tyres ~ it may just be that the runflat indicator is still working.
