Things to memorize

One of the most interesting people I know has crystal clear pictures of the periodic table, map of the world, Japanese Hiragana and Katakana scripts, and various other info stored in his head. He knows the properties for each of the elements, the history of their discovery, the capitals, major cities, rivers, mountains, etc., for each country, its current political affairs, population size, land area, etc. He reads a lot, and often has really great insights into various topics.
I would like to memorize:
Human anatomy and common diseases (seems like it would take years, hang on, it does take years to become a doctor)
Countries and capitals
Useful maths shortcuts (I only know one--how to square any 2 or 3-digit number ending in 5)
That's about it...I think. So, what do you know? Poems? War dates? What would you think is useful stuff to learn?

He is unemployed, kind of. Retired (in his 30s) after founding a few dotcom companies and selling them off for millions during the day. He travels and drinks wine, mostly. Just bought a vineyard in Australia and I think he is part owner in a couple here in Northern California. Also has a DB9 and a few other nice cars. And a smallish jet. Not a "failure" by any means.

You know that? Wow! Doesn't sound very useful...unless you work at the LHC or something. 
Why would they need to know Pi at an airport?Anatomy i'd have thought would be quite easy, even if you go for all the muscles etc as they are often named from words describing them, or having common meanings.

I find memorizing the anatomy very difficult going, and I am decent at memorization--I bet my friend I could learn the periodic table too and I did it in a day, and haven't forgotten it 8 months later (I don't know all the details for each element like he does). I have resolved to learn anatomy...let's see how long it takes. Right now my goal is to memorize 15 muscles a day.

If you have time to learn, anatomy is not difficult, there are a few medical books you can get hold of and get stuck into. BUT, why not learn another language or two?
I know a few...they get rusty very quickly if you don't practice, don't they! I would love to learn Italian. It sounds great!
