A question about building skyscrapers.

How do they increase the height of the cranes? From what I can see, cranes on high-rises seem to be anchored in the building's lift-shaft, but how do they add new height? Do they jack it up? And if so from which part?
Idle question but one which is now bugging me.
Also, building high rises on the coast. Next door to me they are building a 54 storey apartment block, been at the foundations for months now, keep building them and knocking them down again (?) but whenever the tide comes in the foundations flood so eventually there will obviously be a lot of seawater sloshing around underneath the tower block. Is this a good thing?

the tower cranes are self erecting, and if you look, you'll see an extra section on it where it can jack itself up on, and drop another segment in the middle.
as for the foundations being taken out, there must be some little disaster, either the concrete has failed tests, or the engineers marked it out wrong.
