Opinions on the New Year fireworks display in London?

Having watched BBC1's coverage of the New Year and the ensuing fireworks display on the London Eye, I thought it was mighty impressive, and worked extremely well. I think it really showed up what other countries had done for their 12 o'clock moment, and made me feel good!
I also know of several people who thought that however much money that was spent on the firework display was too much, and we shouldn't have had anything to mark the occasion (or something smaller).

Whats the PH opinion on this?

I thought all the old buggers sitting at their computers for new year would have grumbled, but fair play to you all

Try posting it again in the morning when there are less beers about and more sore heads! I wonder if you'll still get the same answer!

I might have to pop down to London to see them for myself next year too, should have a PH party...

My thoughts, in order:

1) They did well to stick that lot on the wheel in a few hours.
2) The UK is bankrupt - who's paying for this?
3) Nice idea using the bangs instead of music.
4) Is this being paid for by yet more borrowed money?
5) A bit of the 1815 overture would be nice.
6) We must be running into the millions by now.
7) I like the searchlights in the smoke
8) Who's paying for all this?
9) Wonder if there are any cameramen in the capsule thingys? No, H&S wouldn't allow it
10) I wish that irritating Geordie ex-BP presenter would shut up

Becuase people want to enjoy the first 10 minutes of the year before being resigned to the situation when waking up later?

On another note, I like the way the 'I could have done better myself vote' is rising, I think the PH average empty beer tally is increasing...

Ah, but if it wasn't for the fireworks, then less people would go to London. Which means TFL and all the bars/clubs/restaurants would makes less money...meaning even worse recession!

I reckon the fireworks effectively pay for themselves a good few times over...

It was good, but I just don't think London as a city lends itself well to fireworks displays. Maybe a different focus/background would make it better, like Hyde Park, backdrop of Buckinghma Palace, Greenwich etc.

Still not a patch on Sydney.

There was actually only 20 seconds of real fireworks.

In the interest of budget cuts (to pay salarys) the BBC simply 'looped' the fireworks display over several hundred times to keep all the pissheads watching happy.

I saw the Edinburgh one instead & thoroughly enjoyed it. The London one was a maybe little too protracted and had too many lulls for my tastes, but I thought it was good, too: the Big Ben/London Eye combo is great- they have to use it at the olympics!

I think I preferred Edinburghs shock/awe attempt at nuking the castle/blowing the st out of the sky: I wonder if they were sponsored/paid for by RBS this time? Cost-wise; sure, it's probably not the best way for the govt spend our money, but we all overspend at this time of year, and it could be argued that NY events bring a boom in trade to local pubs, so the money goes round & round.
