Interior heater Fan/Blower
Discussion
Having fixed the interior fan switch (refitted an original style one) over the last few days it has become apparent that the blower bearings are on their way out as they squeel on fan start up and run down when being switched off (very audible with engine off but cannot be heard over engine noise normally).
Has anyone replaced one of these? If so where the hell is it fitted, how do you get it out and does anyone have any idea what it is from (part numbers etc)?
If not to difficult to remove I'll probably take it out strip and refurb it, but a donor source would leave a back up route if all fails. Most likely course though is that I'll leave it be until it fails completely as I don't use the blower much - the roof being off is normally enough!!!

Bad news: The dash has to come out before you can take out the heater. Can't help you with the heater, haven't taken it apart, and I didn't see any marks on it to give a clue where it's sourced.
YepI think that TVR built the S by hanging a heater motor on a butcher's hook, and building the rest of the car onto it. It's a right bugger to get out again!
I've just done mine, dash out and stuck the heater on the bench. Bad news is it's a sealed unit, so if you want to free the motor the housing will require some cutting up. The motor has no markings that I could see so I went down to my local scrappy and sourced a new motor from there.
The one I used was a motor that powered the engine fan from a MGTF. It's only one speed but its blowing power is inbetween low and high on the original fan. I'm not too worried about the fact its one speed but if you want two speed I suggest either replacing the whole unit or try and find a motor of similar size from another car heater, the original is more than likely a ford unit, try your local scrap yard.

Adrian,
If you've got any photos of the unit, or how it was secured in the car could you email them to me at mark@gbsportscar.com as it will help me have something to work from if/when I come to remove mine - it won't be short term as it works ok still it's just noisy (but quieter than the engine)

Yeah no worries mate, the dash is back in now but I did take a few low quality photo's, i'll send them to you tonight. The fan unit is basically held in with 4 screws, which screw into the bottom of the dash board, so the fan unit is suspended from the underneath of the dashtop (the top bit with the demister vents in). Does that make any sense? its quite difficult to explain. It might be easier to remove the passenger side wall and reach in with some WD40, then just spray loads directly into the fan, it may lubricate it a bit and stop or quieten the noise. If you do have to remove the dash, i would suggest taking loads of photo's of the wiring because mine was different to the S bible.
