Being miserable or happy, which takes the most effort ?

Being happy which explains very quickly why there's so many miserable bds walking around this country. The same miserable bds that have the sodding cheek to ask what you're smiling at if you have the nerve to walk around with a happy expression on your chops.

Depression is very tiring, happiness makes you feel good about yourself. The psychological effects can then have a similar physical effect...

But "being miserable of happy" as in the title sounds far more serious...

Really? I read this forum and look at fantastic cars and aspire to work hard in 2009 to get a better one. Then I read Pie and Piston and want to garrot myself. :-)

Neither, if I feel happy or sad (although generated internally) is largely created by events/things outside of my control, consequently both emotions occur due to environment and therefore take zero effort, they just are.

I find it easier to just spiral into misery letting one thought take over another. With self-control, I can avoid it. Don't know if some people can naturally do the opposite.

I've had a brilliant day today.

I have access to a vast supply of free firewood for the logburner - it 'just' needs to be chopped up. Some friends came over today with big axes, we've chopped and hauled a month's worth of logs and are currently enjoying a blazing fire.

Simple pleasures, and all that.

Myself and my fellow choppers today are all unemployed - having gone from £50k + salaries to, erm, zilch.

Maybe we're kidding ourselves, but there is a vast satisfaction in the barter economy - trading resources for labour. Now we all have free heating for a month.
