Or are you wanting something more rural if so i would say Oban would be a good place to base yourself unless you have a desire to slide down mountains with planks on your feet

This place is about 8-9 miles north of Ullapool. It's a fantastic road up there plus you have to drive one of the most picturesque single track roads to get there.

Proper log/peat/coal fire and the local boozer is just a short walk away. A nice hostelry is is too.

If it's Edinburgh, then the Witchery is an excellent and atmospheric hotel.

I was in Oban for 5 days during Oct. Really lovely over that way, plus there lots to do, and tonnes of ferry trips to the islands.

Inverness is a few hrs drive away, as is Glasgow

No fire place, but a great wee cottage, with everything you need (except internet )

That boat shed looks superb - bit out of the budget sadly! I think we'd like to go for a cottage. Lochs and mountains - very happy to get out of the cities! Heading up from Cambridge so wont make it to the far far north.

Spent 7 weeks as a student in the Assynt area.

Lochinver area is superb.

Thanks. Just on Ryanair now - Stansted/Glasgow return x2 is £90 (flight pre tax cost a total of 6p!)

That leaves budget to hire something meaty for the quiet roads

I stayed just near to Fort William for a week in December, it was great. Plenty of walks, scenery is amazing.

Can recommend the area around Stirling which is beautiful - we stayed at a little place called Fintry - cottage on a farm - but close enough to a castle/hotel which had the restuarant in the dungeon. Haggis, neeps & tatties with whiskey to follow on tap.... muuumhhh
