Hi Guys,

Happy New Year to you all.

Well the hangover is clearing and I am in work, pretty much on my own, so it's nice and quiet.

Anyway I got to thinking. At my last service at Dulfords, it was suggested to me to get my chassis steam cleaned and then drive it for 2 weeks in the dry (yeah right..) and then it would be ready for being 'treated' (dunno what specifically this involves, but it sounds like a good way to eek out a bit more longevity out of the chassis). Trouble is I don't have the faintest idea where to go to get the thing steam cleaned in preparation. So my questions are:

Has anybody had this done?
Opinions on if it's worthwhile?
Does anybody have any recommendations where I might take it for the steam clean - will be done when (IF) the weather perks up. I am located near to Taunton if that helps at all?

Thanks chaps...

Great, thanks. I will be looking at getting this done in a few months when the weather is a bit more agreeable. What sort of cost would it be? Feel free to pm me if you like.

Best join the AA. I would not put a steam cleaner near my car, unless it is one of the very small machines that are for spot cleaning, but that would be fairly pointless. Need to get it up on ramps regardless, so mobile services would be of no use unless you have this facility.

Well they didn't last time I had a service (which was about 11 months ago).

If you know different let me know.

I am slightly concerned about letting the uninitiated lose on my car, but I don't really see what the other options are

Is steam cleaning a good way to prep the chassis for painting? I would of thought it would have introduced moisture that would then be sealed in by the painting?

I havent seen a Cerbera yet which is so bad that it needs steam cleaning, but having said that I cant see it doing any harm.
2 years ago when I didnt have the time to properly prepare the front wishbones properly - i.e wire brush, sandpaper, rust treatment, primer, paint - I blasted the rusty metal with Waxoyl. 2 years later when I removed the waxoyl to prepare and paint it, the metal underneath was perfect. Waxoyl doesn't look pretty, but it does the job, kills the rust and protects the metal from the elements - Good stuff.

Dulfords did ask me to drive it in dry conditions for 2 weeks after the clean to let it fully dry out - of course 2 weeks of dry might be a bit of a tall order...
