Hi all,

Just want to pick your brains on the following swap - I currently have 18" wheels as std on my 320d Sport but I'm off skiing in a few weeks and have been having issues finding snow chains to fit these wheels due to the clearence between the tyres and wheel arches. I have however found what I think is a solution, a set of 16" wheels with snow tyres on that are essentially the same price as a set of high end chains......any reason why these shouldn't fit my Sport? The wheels are from a 320d E46 Touring so I don't see why there should be a massive issue.

The only issues I could think of would be, will they go over the brake discs? No idea if the discs on my car are any different to a standard E46? And will it lower the car too much so the M Sport body kit (front bumper and side skirts) will be too close to the road?

I have seen the Sport model on 17" wheels before so I don't think it is an issue given we are only talking the next size down but I could do with some reassurance before I part with my cash!

Cheers all!!

I think brakes are exactly the same on Sport and SE models.

I use Weissenfels Klack & Go chains. Readily available and just over £100 for a set that fit 255/35x18.

If you've got sports suspension you do need to get the jack out to fit them though. Wheel doesn't need to be off the ground. You just need more space between it and the arch to fasten the two ends of the cable together behind the wheel. Once you've done that it's the work of moments as Nigella would no doubt say. And they work a treat.
