WHY WON'T IT IDLE!!!???

Hi,
I've recently rebuilt my engine and reinstalled it. It now won't idle properly in Neutral and Park (1500rpm) but returns down to 800rpm when in a gear.
I've disconnected the Idle control valve with no effect as too the breather system.
ANy ideas? I'm taking the car to a BMW specialist to diagnose what is going on, but would appreciate any suggestions that I can investigate before hand.
