I imagine if my tax levels were that low, and I knew that I had no real payout if made redundant, I would have put more of my extra income away just in case.

It's nothing to do with that. It's about people who want it all, no tax, no VAT but full employment protection and severance pay.

Living in Jersey is not cheap, £25 for a visit to the doctors, free prescriptions for kids has only just come in. Dentist fees for everyone. Food/gas/electricity/phone bills are extortionate.

3% sales tax added to everything (Food and children's clothing.)

The Woolworth in Jersey was a godsend to the locals, it will be missed by many.

We don't pay for children to go the dentist until they leave school, we don't pay VAT on food or children's clothing.

The utilities there are so expensive because there is no competition. At the moment there is big debate going on to let one supermarket onto the island, the only choice they have at the moment are a Co-Op, Chequers or a small M&S, and prices are much more expensive than the UK, I think maybe shipping costs are added.

They may not pay Tax on earnings up to a certain level but they certainly pay it out in other ways.

So its an expensive (tax haven) place to live, just like Monaco, an island in the pacific, etc...

Unless they have a statutory or contractual obligation to pay redundancy, the administrators can't just decide to go giving money away, even if they thought it would be "right" to do so - there are too many legitimate creditors in the queue for it.

Jersey have had it good for a long time,things are changing there very quickly, It wont be long before there are no Tax advantages there anymore,the old farts in Government are slowly dying off with the new breed of greedy politicians coming through.

For those of you who have never been there, a very strange and weird place !

I visited in 1997 and it certainly did come across as a rather odd place. Familiar but different. There did seem to be a rather mean spirited "I'm all right Jack" air to the locals I spoke to.

Many people have had it good there for a long time. I reckon times are going to be tougher there than they have been for a very long time and the cold wind of living in a "non-welfare" type environment is going to bite that much harder than in the UK.
