Have I just convinced myself - 4.4V8 v's 3.0TD6?
Discussion
So I'm looking at getting a Range Rover - budget upto £20k and have just done the calcs to work out whether to go for the TD6 or the V8 - I have read peoples thoughts but wanted to do the comparison on what the fuel will actually costs. I've used the average mpg figures from the wiki and I get the following;
Petrol (gal) £ 3.82
Diesel (gal) £ 4.50
4.4 V8 Average MPG 17.9
3.0TD6 Average MPG 21.35
5000 miles£ £1,066.66 (V8)£ 1,053.99 (TD6) -£ 12.67
10000 miles £2,133.32 (V8)£ 2,107.98 (TD6) -£ 25.34
15000 miles £3,199.98 (V8)£ 3,161.97 (TD6) -£ 38.01
20000 miles £4,266.64 (V8)£ 4,215.96 (TD6) -£ 50.67
So in a nutshell worse case scenario of doing 20,000 miles per year I'm only going to save £50 going for the TD6 rather than the V8?
Is my maths correct? Are the average mpg's about right?
If so - I'm off tomorrow to get a 4.4 V8

Use my calculator that does it all automagicly for you:
http://www.mez.co.uk/derv.html
Due the cost difference 17.9 petrol MPG is 20.4 Diesel MPG.
At 20k miles PA, I have it as a £178 per annum saving using the derv burner.

For the price difference, buy the V8. It's a much better car all round. If you don't drive like a hooligan, you may just squeeze 20mpg out of the V8 as well. If you're going to be doing more than 10k a year, it may even be worth looking at an LPG conversion. Plenty of threads around here on that subject. The joy of driving a V8 is even better knowing you're doing it for half price.

I would figure 15mpg for the petrol mind you - my 540 with the same engine only returns 18 around town.
Around town anything is going to plummet, our V8 Rangie has averaged 19.9 over the last 20k of mixed driving. We have an A8 for long trippage, so the Rangie is for family outings and school run (we're in the sticks, so that involves overtaking tractors / MPVs and several substantial hills, not to mention windy lanes)Have been espousing this very calculation for several years - when we bought ours for £30k, an equivalent age and mileage TD6 diesel was £38k at a dealer.... ridiculous markup. We're now selling our Rangie as wifey is determined to have a Discovery 3, and I shall do precisely the same exercise again - go for the V8.
